Why Invisalign Is Awesome at Halloween

Why Invisalign Is Awesome at Halloween

Why Invisalign Is Awesome at HalloweenHalloween is fast approaching and let’s face it, we’ve all snuck into the bag of loot brought home by our kiddos. The good news is that if you’re considering orthodontic treatment, Invisalign will give you the freedom to indulge in tasty treats without worrying about damaging your braces.

Overall, Invisalign is more convenient than braces. People who wear braces are required to follow a restricted diet to prevent brackets and wires from becoming damaged. For example, hard or sticky candy is outlawed for people who have braces – but not with Invisalign!

If you wear braces, foods like hard, sticky candy, nuts, and whole apples are a big no-no.  If the metal braces are damaged, they must be repaired.  Orthodontists around the world and (yours truly) report that the week after Halloween is one of the busiest weeks of the year for emergencies.  And don’t bother telling me you were eating soup because I’m not a dummy despite what my family tells me!

With Invisalign, however, there are no appliances to break because you can remove your aligners before you eat.  Pop your aligners out, sneak their bag-o-candy away, gobble as much as you can without getting busted, return bag to original spot, and pop your aligners back in!

Technically, you should brush first, but you don’t want to get caught so brush when you’re heart rate goes back down.

We do have to be careful about commonly reported dental problems caused by Halloween candy such as tooth decay, chipped or broken teeth, and damaging previous dental work like fillings and crowns.

Here are some general guidelines to bear in mind as you’re enjoying your Halloween candy if you have braces:

  • Avoid eating sticky, chewy, crunchy, and very hard sweets. Some examples of these sweets include Jolly Ranchers, Starburst, Tootsie Pops, or taffy. These sweets can easily pull an existing filling out or even break a tooth.
  • Try not to bite down on lollipops; in fact, if possible, please stay away from lollipops. Lollipops and other popular hard candies that you keep in your mouth for an extended period bathes your teeth in sugar. Sucking on these hard candies can easily cause tooth decay. And like the Tootsie Pop owl knows…you’re going to bite into them…and break stuff!

After you’ve finished your Halloween snacks, make sure to brush and floss your teeth. In addition, please be sure to brush and rinse your Invisalign aligners.

There you have it, a few reasons why Invisalign is the preferred treatment for candy lovers, especially on Halloween.  If you’re interested in learning how you can get the smile you’ve always wanted with Invisalign treatment, contact our office today and schedule your free consultation.
