How do self-ligating braces measure up?

Self-ligating have recently gained a lot of popularity for several reasons:

  • Less time and fewer visits to the orthodontist
  • They cause less friction and discomfort
  • There is no need for ligature such as bands, elastics or ties
  • They can be easier to clean

What are Self-ligating Braces?

Orthodontists place self-ligating braces much like traditional metal braces, with the exception of ligature. This means that no rubber bands, ties or elastics are required. In its place, special brackets or clips are used to help the archwire move your teeth in place. These clips provide more freedom and may reduce discomfort which is sometimes associated with traditional metal braces.
With self-ligating braces, you can also expect less visits to our practice. A study performed by the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, stated that:

“Self-ligating bracket systems displayed a significantly lower level of frictional resistance, dramatically less chair-time for arch wire removal and insertion, and promoted improved infection control, when compared with polyurethane elastomeric and stainless steel tie wire ligation for ceramic and metal twin brackets.”

The type of self-ligating braces we use at our Houston Orthodontic practice is made by the Damon System. These braces are also smaller than regular braces making them more attractive to wearers. For some of our patients, the best thing about self-ligating braces is that they can often reduce the total length of treatment by 4 to 6 months! That means that your smile might take significantly less time to achieve than you first thought.

Similar to regular brackets, the self-ligating appliances are attached to your teeth using special adhesive and are not removed for the duration of your treatment. Therefore, good oral hygiene is a must to ensure your successful outcome. As always, you must try to abstain from sugar, hard foods and soft drinks.  The good news is that self-ligating braces are easier to keep clean due to the lack of elastic, rubber, or metal ties.
